Measuring for new collar using an existing collar

Updated: Apr 28

The easiest way to measure for a new collar, is to use the existing one. Most collars are either a buckle connection, or a quick release connection. Both of these are measured slightly differently, and just require a tape measure or ruler.

(If you don't have an existing collar to accurately measure from, check out this post.)

Buckle Connection

To measure an existing buckle connection accurately, measure from the inside of the buckle (where the tongue hits the buckle) to the usual hole that is used. In the example below, the usual hole is circled in red, so the measurement is approximately 34cm.

Quick Release Connection

To measure an existing Quick Release (or Side Release) buckle accurately, measure from the base of the prongs to the end of the other piece. In the example below, the measurement is approximately 37cm.

Once you have the collar, test the fit on your dog. Ensure it's snug enough that it won't slip off over your dog's head but loose enough that it doesn't restrict movement or cause discomfort. You should be able to comfortably fit two fingers between the collar and your dog's neck.

As your dog grows or loses weight, their collar size may change. It's essential to regularly check the fit of the collar to ensure it remains comfortable and secure.
